                  Apples and Orchards

We have been growing organic apples since 1997.  We have around 300 trees, and 80 different varieties, including many that are local to Cumbria or Scotland.  Some of the traditional apples that we grow include Duke of Devonshire, Worcester Pearmain, Longstart, and our own Cockermouth Codling and Lorton Vale.  We also have a good selection of more modern varieties like Discovery, Katy, Elstar and Pinova.

                  Apples in Season

The apple season begins in Cumbria in late August with earlies like Irish Peach and Beauty of Bath.  The peak season is mid September until November, when there are a huge range of varieties to choose from.
Late season lasts until the New Year, with late keeping apples like Star of Devon and Cornish Aromatic.

This year much of the apple harvest has been affected by scab, a fungal disease which affects the foliage and wood of the tree, and the skin of the fruit.  Consequently, many of the apples are blemished.  However, we still have large stocks of many different varieties:-
Dessert: Maltster, Lemon Queen, Star of Devon, Forge, Fortune
Dual Purpose: Scotch Bridget, Galloway Pippin
Cooking: Bramley, Newton Wonder, Mere de Menage
